Penelitian yang dilakukan oleh Akiko Matsumoto-Oda ini berawal ketika ia mengamati baboons (babun) Kenya yang sedang berkelahi. Hasil akhir dari perkelahian itu adalah luka-luka ringan hingga serius di tubuh monyet tersebut.
Bukan hanya luka, ia juga memperhatikan bahwa monyet-monyet itu mampu pulih jauh lebih cepat daripada manusia. Hasil pengamatan ini dibawanya ke penelitian lebih lanjut.
Dikutip dari IFL Science, Matsumoto-Oda bersama rekan-rekannya melakukan percobaan untuk membandingkan tingkat penyembuhan manusia dengan mamalia lain. Hewan yang ikut serta dalam studi ini adalah tikus, mencit (tikus kecil), dan empat spesies primata lain.
Keempatnya adalah simpanse (Pan troglodytes), baboons zaitun (Papio anubis), monyet vervet (Chlorocebus pygerythrus), dan money Sykes (Cercopithecus albogularis).
Luka di Tubuh Manusia Lebih Lambat Sembuh dari Hewan
Setiap spesies memiliki kemampuan menyembuhkan luka dengan kecepatan yang berbeda-beda. Disebutkan bila manusia tampak sembuh lebih lambat dari hewan lainnya.
Penelitian sebelumnya tidak menjelaskan apakah kecepatan penyembuhan yang lambat ini hanya terjadi pada manusia. Untuk itu, Matsumoto-Oda mencoba menjawabnya.
Selama penelitian, ia dan rekan-rekannya membandingkan tingkat penyembuhan manusia. Responden yang ikut serta selain hewan pembanding adalah 24 pasien yang baru saja menjalani operasi pengangkatan tumor kulit.
Hewan-hewan ini dibius dan kemudian diberi luka sepanjang 4 centimeter melalui pembedahan. Tim juga mengamati luka yang terjadi secara alami pada lima simpanse yang ditawan.
Pengamatan dilakukan setiap hari. Hasilnya ditemukan bila luka manusia sembuh dengan kecepatan rata-rata 0,25 milimeter sehari, sedangkan luka hewan sembuh dengan kecepatan 0,61 millimeter sehari.
Para peneliti juga mencatat bahwa tidak ada perbedaan signifikan antara penyembuhan luka di antara keempat spesies primata non-manusia. Baik primata, tikus, ataupun mencit.
Untuk itu, mereka menyimpulkan bila penyembuhan pada luka manusia lebih lambat dibandingkan nenek moyang kuno kita. Alasannya karena adaptasi evolusi manusia.
“Penemuan ini menunjukkan bahwa penyembuhan luka yang lambat yang terjadi pada manusia bukanlah karakteristik umum di antara ordo primata. (penelitian juga) menyoroti kemungkinan adanya adaptasi evolusi pada manusia,” tulis ilmuwan dalam studi yang diterbitkan pada jurnal The Royal Society.
Evolusi yang dimaksud adalah perubahan pada kulit manusia. Manusia merontokkan bulu dan mengembangkan kelenjar keringat, akibatnya kepadatan rambut pada tubuh berkurang.
Karena tidak ada bulu, manusia berpotensi mengalami risiko cedera yang lebih tinggi. Lantaran tidak adanya perlindungan, kita membutuhkan waktu lebih lama untuk bisa sembuh.
Para peneliti juga menyarankan dukungan sosial bisa membantu mengurangi bahaya penyembuhan luka manusia yang lambat. Ada bukti arkeologis yang mendukung gagasan ini.
Contohnya terlihat pada tengkorak berusia 1,8 juta tahun milik Homo erectus jantan tua yang tidak memiliki gigi. Setelah diteliti, ditemukan individu ini mungkin didukung oleh kelompok sosialnya dalam penyiapan makanan dan nutrisi.
Bukti lainnya terlihat pada sisa-sisa jasad laki-laki Neanderthal yang telah kehilangan lengan dan mengalami cedera tengkorak. Meski memiliki luka, ia mampu hidup hingga usia paruh baya.
Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini menjadi jawaban tentang bagaimana nenek moyang kita bisa beradaptasi dengan upaya penyembuhan yang lebih lambat. Tetapi penelitian lebih lanjut masih diperlukan sebelum mengambil kesimpulan yang lebih luas.
